A Westpac bank error involving duplicate payments which affected the Government has been resolved, according to a statement from the bank on Friday evening.

One of the duplicated payments was taken from the Ministry of Education and totalled less than $1 million, according to Westpac.

"In the last 24 hours a minor systems issue caused some duplicate payments. That issue has been identified, the root cause fixed and transactions reversed," the statement said.

"No one will be left out of pocket as a result of this issue."

According to Stuff, Government officials initially feared the error could have led to as much as to $1.2 billion being taken.

The Ministry of Education payments were directed to early childhood education providers but teacher's salaries were not affected, Stuff  reports.
