Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has fired back at a Daily Mail columnist who criticised her for being pregnant while in office.

Speaking to US talk show the Today Show, Ms Ardern was asked to respond to a scathing Daily Mail column by Liz Jones who said she was betraying voters by being pregnant.

"A pregnant prime minister isn't feminism, it's betraying your voters. Surely your country shouldn't have to compete for attention with a colicky toddler," Ms Jones wrote in the column in January.

Ms Ardern said "eh" and laughed off Ms Jones' comments.

"Women multitask every single day. Every single day. The sentiment in that piece suggests women can only be mothers, or other. Can I be a Prime Minister and a mother? Absolutely," she told the Today Show.

"Will I have help to do it? Yes," she said.

The Today Show posted a snippet of the interview on Twitter and said the full interview will be aired tomorrow (local time).
