Winston Peters comes out in support of eating pies with a knife and fork

Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters has thrown his support behind an important cause - those who eat pies with a knife and fork.

That includes Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who triggered debated when he Snapchatted himself using a knife and fork to consume a pie.

"In support of @TurnbullMalcolm, I don't give a rat's derriere what people think I'll eat a pie with a knife and fork. Some pies are very flaky, and sometimes you want to put sauce on," Mr Peters tweeted.

His supportive comments come after some strained relations with Australia. Mr Peters put pressure on Australia to release a 17-year-old New Zealand boy who had been held in detention for four months. He then told the Australians to change their flag.

Mr Peters' pie eating preference puts him in stark opposition to former Prime Minister Bill English, who ate the pastry encased treat with his hands.

Newshub understands Opposition leader Simon Bridges also uses his hands.

Mr Peters doesn't often weigh in on Twitter. He hasn't replied to anyone on Twitter since March.

But the question about pie etiquette had Mr Peters break his Twitter silence.

Two weeks ago, Newshub's Andrew Gourdie tweeted "Now THIS is a tweet thread. Can we get @winstonpeters to weigh in on this please @NewshubPolitics team? Cc @TovaOBrien @JennaLynchNZ".

Now we finally know what the Acting Prime Minister thinks of pie eating etiquette.
