Porirua to be rebuilt under a $1.5b Government plan

Thousands of state homes in Porirua will be demolished and replaced as part of a $1.5 billion regeneration project.

The Government plan will see worn-out state houses replaced and 2000 new KiwiBuild homes built.

But while the project is about building new housing and infrastructure, the Government also needs to focus on rebuilding the community.

In the last few months, there have been six suspected suicides in Porirua - and five of them were people under the age of 30.

"Clearly with the issues we have around rates of depression, rates of suicide - it's clear we're failing," Prime Minister Jacinda Arden says.

The children of Porirua will witness massive change to their town with the huge regeneration project, and the advice to the Government from a local social services provider is simple - listen to their needs.

"When there's that type of death in the community it affects everyone," says Whanau Centre CEO Liz Kelly.

Some positive news for a community grappling with tragedy.
