Green MP Gareth Hughes has shared an emotional post after losing his mother to cancer.

Hughes wrote on Facebook on Wednesday that his mother, Gillian, had died on Tuesday after a battle with cancer.

"I'll miss you Mum. She wasn't in pain and wasn't alone but is so deeply missed by her kids and grandkid," Hughes said on Facebook.

"My Mum, Gillian Florence Emily Hughes lived a full life of 70 years. The funeral will be held Thursday 17th October at 1pm at Dunblaine on Rutene Rd, Gisborne. All welcome.

"If I’ve been a bit quieter than normal these last few months it’s because I’ve been supporting Mum through her terminal illness."

Hughes included an image of him and his mother with the post, which has received more than 400 reactions in under an hour.

Many commenters wanted to share their condolences with the MP.

"Gill has a special place in our hearts. She was so good to us. Generous," said one person.

"Gareth, from this stranger who admires your work - I am so sorry for your loss. She raised a good human being in you," said another.
