The annual Labour Party conference gets well and truly underway on Saturday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern opened the event on Friday night, where more than 600 delegates are gathering in Whanganui.

"We are not a perfect organisation," she told supporters. "This year we have all been on a journey and we have learnt some incredibly important lessons."

A number of closed policy sessions will take place in preparation for 2020. There will also be a session on the culture of the party.

The new Labour Party President will be revealed too.

Nigel Harworth was forced to resign because of the party's handling of sexual assault allegations against a staffer. The whole affair will be a major focus of the conference.

Ardern will be speaking to Three's Newshub Nation on Saturday morning at 9:30am.
