Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard tests out new slide and playground at Parliament

Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard has shown his more playful side by testing out Parliament's new playground.

Mallard was joined by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Wednesday to open the playground - just in time for International Children's Day.

Eager children lined up to test out the new slide - and Mallard was right there beside them.

The 65-year-old could be seen gleefully sliding down the slide - proving you're only as old as you feel.

"Parliament belongs to all New Zealanders and I am delighted to see this play space come to fruition so that families and children can enjoy the grounds of Parliament and feel like they belong and are welcome here," he said on Wednesday.

The slide is the centerpiece of the playground, built from sustainable forest beech. It's safety pad is made from recycled tyres.

Mallard wasn't the only politician who couldn't resist a quick go on the new playground.

He told the crowd of children that he had a secret to share with them.

"We were going to have an official opening but I turned on my phone early this morning and what did I see?" he said through laughter

"A very naughty Minister of Education testing out the slide to make sure it worked!"

It seems Chris Hipkins isn't afraid to have a little fun either.
