Labour Party ministers and MPs have taken to social media to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday.

Jacinda Ardern turned 40 on Sunday and many of her colleagues took the time to mark her special day.

Grant Robertson posted a trio of photos on Instagram of the pair throughout the years.

"There have been good times, crazy times and sad times but it's always been my honour to stand shoulder to shoulder with my friend @jacindaardern. Happy 40th birthday!"

While Ardern was visiting the Newtown Markets in Wellington on Saturday, Labour MP Paul Eagle surprised her with a cake he'd baked himself.

"I thought I'd get the COVID-19 baking skills back out and throw together a surprise for the boss Jacinda Ardern," he wrote on Facebook.

He also got the crowd at the markets to sing 'Happy Birthday' to her.

Labour MP Tamati Coffey shared a message for Ardern on Facebook.

"Happy birthday Jacinda Ardern. Aotearoa is lucky to have you leading us at this crazy uncertain time. May your empathy and compassion for humanity be your legacy."

MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan also wished her boss a happy birthday, saying on Facebook Ardern is "the most inspirational leader of our time".

The Labour Party shared messages from fans of the Prime Minister on its Instagram page.

"Happy birthday you absolute icon," one person wrote.

"I hope your special day will bring you lots of happiness," another said.
