Jacinda Ardern has received a 'very nice change' from the usual briefcase she takes home from the office every night.

The Prime Minister posted a photo of an edible briefcase on her Instagram, a cake made for her 40th birthday on Sunday from her team at Parliament.

"Every night they send me off with one of these briefcases," she said in a post on Monday. "An edible one made for a very nice change!"

The cake is a realistic photo of the briefcase, complete with three Beehive printed documents on top.

The leader turned 40 on Sunday, and celebrated with her fiancé Clarke Gayford and their daughter Neve.

Ardern has shared an appreciation for creative cakes in the past, infamously making a piano cake for her two-year-old daughter's birthday in June.

Posting it on social media, she received praises for her "imperfect efforts".

Partner Clarke Gayford also shared a birthday post for Ardern to his Instagram, calling her "my favourite achiever in the whole wide world".

"I don't really do these posts, but I think a bit of symmetry like the number 40 is worth posting on," the 43-year-old wrote.

"Happy Birthday today to my favourite achiever in the whole wide world, someone, who despite everything on her plate, still finds time to squeeze lots of fun, love and happiness into our wee family unit."
