National's Nick Smith and Green Party MP Chlöe Swarbrick went head-to-head on Saturday night in a fiery debate over whether New Zealand should legalise recreational cannabis.

In the upcoming referendum, Kiwis will have the chance to vote on whether or not they support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill.

Speaking on Newshub Nation, Smith - National's drug reform spokesperson - argued cannabis legalisation may "compound" New Zealand's "quite serious problems" with mental illness and drug-driving.

Swarbrick - who holds both the drug law reform and mental health portfolios - argued that these issues are already happening under the "status quo" and "sensible regulations" are the way forward.
