Judith Collins not worried about racist abuse hurled at husband

The National Party leader isn't worrying about racist abuse on social media about her husband.

David Wong-Tung, Judith Collins' partner, was criticised on Monday for sharing images on his personal Facebook page mocking Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

One of the images of Ardern was shaded green with the title "The Incredible SULK", referencing the Hulk Marvel comic-book character. That came after she expressed her anger at a Government communications botch-up which asked hundreds of thousands of Aucklanders to be tested for COVID-19 last week.

Some of the posts have been described as misogynistic and when questioned about them on Monday, Collins said they wouldn't be something she'd post, but she couldn't control her husband.

Wong-Tung, who is Chinese-Samoan, subsequently received a barrage of social media criticism. One comment spotlighted by the National Party's Meme Working Group Facebook page - which is the page that originally posted the anti-Ardern memes - compared Wong-Tung to an "ape".

Collins on Tuesday morning didn't appear concerned.

"These things happen. We don't worry about it," she told media.

Asked if social media was getting out of control and if attacks were becoming overly vociferous, the Leader of the Opposition left it for others to judge.

"People will jump to their own conclusions on that, make their own conclusions. I don't deal with them."

She said she wasn't interested in discussing her family and was instead focused on her job. Collins also reiterated she wouldn't have shared the pictures Wong-Tung had.

"Those are not my actions and I would have not done that. I am sure you will understand that."

On Monday, the National Party leader described her husband as "one of the least sexist people" she knows and that he "gets sick of people having a go at him and me".

"He's married to me - how could he be sexist?

"He's an adult, he'll make his own decisions and you know, let's put it this way: I don't have to answer for him because I haven't been able to control him for 41 years.

"If you've got the secret to how you can control a man who's 64 years old, used to play a lot of rugby and was a policeman, good luck, let me know."

Prior to his sharing of memes, Wong-Tung, who typically stays out of the spotlight, was likely most well-known as being a director of Oravida.
