Green Party co-leader James Shaw has had a "Bernie Sanders moment" after a butterfly landed on his microphone during a campaign speech.

Shaw was visiting Otago Museum's Tropical Butterfly Forest in Dunedin on Sunday evening to speak about the progress and challenges of climate change, when part way through his address a large butterfly unexpectedly greeted him.

"That is extraordinary," he said after he saw the butterfly landed on his microphone. "Now that has never happened to me before."

Shaw compared his butterfly experience to the moment US Senator Bernie Sanders had a small bird land on his podium during a speech in 2016.

"I think there may be some symbolism here," Sanders said at the time, according to CNN.

"That bird is really a dove asking us for world peace. No more wars."
