Labour leader Jacinda Ardern says she can "think of many worse" characters to be compared to than Mary Poppins.
Ardern got a sneak peek of the Mary Poppins Musical and met the cast in Auckland on Thursday.
"I think it was all intended as good sport and I think as far as characters go I can think of many worse to be compared to," she said at a media conference afterwards.
The comparison comes after British political satire show Spitting Image returned to screens. In the first episode, Ardern's character plays the role of Mary Poppins.
The Labour leader also revealed her past musical theatre experience at school including Man of Steel and playing Elizabeth in The Crucible.
However, Ardern said she "won't be breaking into song" on election night, regardless of the result.
Instead, Ardern said the fact that the show is able to go ahead shows that New Zealand's COVID-19 approach has worked.
"This show, and the fact that it will be happening over the next few nights, is indicative of the plan that we have had and the fact that it has delivered the ability for a performance here when many other countries aren't even close to that," she said. "For me, this is a reinforcement of our COVID response."
The country is currently at alert level one after 20 consecutive days without evidence of community transmission.
On Thursday, there were two cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation. So far New Zealand has recorded a total of 1874 cases and 25 deaths.
