Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had a phone conversation with Queen Elizabeth II last week.

Posting on her Instagram on Tuesday morning, Ardern said that it had been such a busy week last week that she hadn't had a chance to inform Kiwis that our Head of State had been in touch.

"Her Majesty the Queen was kind enough to check in to see how New Zealanders have been doing as we finish off the year, and to wish everyone a wonderful break," Ardern wrote.

The Prime Minister said the Queen also "shared a few memories from her time here during the holiday season, it was really lovely".

The Instagram post was accompanied by a photo of Ardern on the phone in her Beehive office smiling.

It's not the first time Ardern has spoken with the Queen this year. Back in April, the pair had a "catch up" about how Kiwis were dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. That was when New Zealand was in alert level 3.

Since then, New Zealand has vanquished COVID-19 from the community. However, the United Kingdom continues to struggle with the virus. On Tuesday, it was announced that London and parts of southern England would be heading into its highest tier of COVID-19 restrictions as a new variant of the virus spread.
