House Speaker Trevor Mallard is appearing before the Governance and Administration Select Committee in Parliament where he is expected to be grilled by National MPs.

It follows revelations that $333,000 of taxpayer money was spent settling Mallard's legal dispute with a former parliamentary staffer he falsely accused of committing rape.

National and ACT have both lost confidence in the Speaker and Judith Collins has called for his resignation, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she still has confidence in him.

"My understanding is that one of the select committees wants to talk to the Speaker this week about the issues that have been raised," Ardern said earlier this week.

"He has proactively contacted the chair to make a time for that so he is making himself available to answer questions that have naturally arisen from this situation."
