COVID-19: Anti-lockdown demonstrators gather outside Jacinda Ardern's office

Anti-lockdown protesters have gathered outside Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's office in a loud and evidence-free demonstration.

New Zealand has gone into alert level 2 and Auckland into an alert level 3 lockdown after three cases of the more transmissible UK variant were found in the south Auckland community.

But this has enraged COVID-sceptics, who are holding a rally against the restrictions and planned vaccination programme.

Several dozen protestors gathered on Monday morning despite the foul weather and the fact that the Prime Minister is in Wellington.

Other signs included swastikas and images of Ardern with devil horns on. Screenshots show one person seeking Ardern's home address and threatening to defecate on her vehicle.

"Does anyone know where Jacinda Ardern lives in Sandringham. Peaceful protestors are asking," they wrote.

"I'm using her Telsa as a hybrid stage meets toilet [sic]."

The protest is being vocally condemned on social media with former Labour advisor Neale Jones calling them "a pack of losers".

"These idiots need a one-way ticket out of this country, no gratitude for the freedoms they've had as a result of the government's approach," another said.

Police say they are continuing to monitor the situation.

"Police attended and have spoken to those involved, reminding them of alert level 3 restrictions," a spokesperson told Newshub.

"Police acknowledge the public's lawful right to protest, however also recognise the importance of preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the community and ensuring people adhere to the alert level restrictions."
