Coronavirus: Judith Collins fears Government has 'lost control' of Delta variant as Jacinda Ardern extends lockdown

Sit tight, Auckland - you're staying in lockdown for at least another eight days after 33 new cases emerged in the city.

Wellington has two new cases, so the capital, along with the rest of the country, will stay at alert level 4 until Friday night.

The 35 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday are a record number for this Delta outbreak and take the total in the community to 107. But the South Island continues its golden run, once again recording no cases.

The risk is far from over, with expert modeller Shaun Hendy predicting this Delta outbreak could grow to 1000 cases, and Kiwis understand that means more time in lockdown.

"Yeah, I think lockdown will definitely be extended," one Wellingtonian told Newshub, while others predicted another week or "another couple weeks" in lockdown.

Their expectations weren't too far off.

"All of New Zealand will remain at level four for an additional four days until 11:59pm, Friday 27 August," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday.

Yes, sorry southerners, although you're yet to get a case, you're staying in lockdown with the north.

"With the head start Delta had, it did manage to create contacts all over the country," Ardern said.

As shown on the below contact heat map, the big blue patch of concentrated contact dots up to the north is why the city of sails is in this for a longer haul - until next Tuesday, at least.

"Your time in level 4 needs to be at least that full 14 days," Ardern said.

We now have over a 100 cases of COVID-19 in the community and officials aren't sure they've fenced this flare-up.

"It's based on the health advice, and obviously the Government feels it's lost control of this COVID-19 Delta variant in the community," National leader Judith Collins told Newshub.

"The number one thing that the Government must take responsibility for is their failure to vaccinate New Zealanders."

Ardern said the lockdown extension is the "safest option for all of us right now" and she's urging Kiwis to "hold the course" for a bit longer.

So deserted motorways are here to stay along with little lockdown activities.

"I've been going to play some basketball which has been fun," one Kiwi told Newshub, while another has been "reading all the novels I got for Christmas".

"I'm in charge of sanitising, spraying the floor of my apartment building," another said.

But lockdown isn't easy.

"Terrible, I hate lockdown, it's just driving me crazy," one Kiwi man told Newshub, while others said they hope this lockdown doesn't go on for "too long".

"My whole business has shut down coz of lockdown so I'm kind of stuffed," one man said, while another added: "I don't believe we can go on like this forever like this, it's just nuts."

Ardern says the Government went hard and early.

"I would say, relative to what we've seen in other countries, this absolutely is a 'go hard, go early' approach."
