Coronavirus: Labour pamphlets distributed during lockdown by 'volunteer who didn't get the message'

Labour Party pamphlets have been distributed during lockdown by a "volunteer who didn't get the message' that it's not allowed, according to general secretary Rob Salmond.

"We have sent multiple messages via MPs, local electorate committees and emails making it clear people must NOT deliver any leaflets in Alert Level 4," Salmond told Newshub.

"We have made it very clear that stopping our in-person political activity is a way we can help stop the spread of the virus."

It came after several social media posts questioning why Labour Party pamphlets had been distributed in the Ellerslie area in Auckland during lockdown, when everyone is supposed to be isolated at home by law.

It comes just a week after another volunteer in Christchurch was criticised for distributing political leaflets in support of Police Minister Poto Williams during the start of Alert Level 4.

The latest pamphlet drop included information about the Government's COVID-19 response, and how Labour is "securing New Zealand's recovery".

The volunteer who broke lockdown rules by distributing the pamphlets won't be punished.

"I've confirmed with our local team that all our volunteer deliverers in the area have been contacted one on one to reinforce the message that there should be no pamphlet deliveries at this time," Salmond said.

"I'm confident this volunteer has received that message."

It seems not everyone is pleased about that.

"Labour is great at breaking rules, and there's never any consequences," a Twitter user wrote.
