Mike King gives Jacinda Ardern rare praise after Gumboot Friday handed $600,000 in funding

Mike King has offered the Prime Minister rare praise after Gumboot Friday was handed hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding by the Government.

The mental health advocate says the charity received $600,000, allowing them to fund 4285 counselling sessions for young people in need.

The funding came through the Government's $1.2 million Mental Wellbeing Innovation Fund announced by Health Minister Andrew Little last Friday.

In a post to his public Facebook page on Monday, King expressed rare gratitude to Jacinda Ardern - someone he has criticised heavily in recent months over perceived failures to address New Zealand's mental health crisis.

"On behalf of all New Zealanders who’s children 25 and under have been struggling to access face to face counselling I'd like to thank you for providing $600,000 that will fund 4285 sessions," he wrote.

"It is a wonderful show of faith in Gumboot Friday and we are all very grateful."

However he said the funding would cover just a tiny portion of the counselling sessions Gumboot Friday expected they would need to provide over the next year.

"To our Gumboot Army I thank you all for your continued support and I'd like to remind you that we still need your help on November 5 to raise funds for the other 31,000 sessions we are going to need to meet the predicted demand over the next 12 months," he wrote.

"With your help we can all make life better for our kids!"

King had last week said Gumboot Friday wouldn't be applying for the Government's Mental Wellbeing Innovation Fund, saying he believed it would be "fraudulent" for the charity to do so.

"I think it is a wonderful idea for anyone who has got a start-up business, any student out there who has an idea to help the mental health crisis, it is a great idea," he told The AM Show.

"We are not a start-up, $1.2 million is the total fund and we need $4 million just to get through the end of the year."

However Ardern on Monday revealed the Government would allocate some of the funds to Gumboot Friday.
