Former Prime Minister Sir John Key is back in the news after delivering a scathing review of the current Government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Sunday, a column by Sir John published by NZ media outlets including Newshub described the country as a "smug hermit kingdom" and outlined his plan for re-opening borders.

The former Prime Minister also answered questions about his column during an interview with The AM Show on Monday after some heated social media debate about it.

"Threatening to open the border so people will get vaccinated is not ruling by fear, it just creates an incentive says John Key. I am not sure he has thought this through," COVID-19 modeller Shaun Hendy said on Twitter.

"My feeling on why John Key's call for the Australian-style roadmap has gone BIG is there's a vision vacuum left by Ardern on the future," said Ben McKay, the New Zealand correspondent for Australian news agency AAP. "Ardern might be making the right calls on COVID response... probably is… but it doesn't leave people with anything to hold onto."
