Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's podium panic as quake strikes mid-press conference

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has for the second time been caught reacting to an earthquake with the cameras rolling.

During her press conference on Friday at the Beehive to announce the Government's new COVID-19 Protection Framework, a 5.9 magnitude quake struck, which appeared to rattle the Prime Minister as her eyes widened.

"Sorry, a slight distraction, would you mind repeating that question?" Ardern said to the reporter who was asking about the big announcement, after the quake had ceased.

It's the second time Ardern has been caught on camera reacting to an earthquake in Wellington.

In May last year, Ardern was being interviewed live by The AM Show from Parliament when a 5.8 magnitude quake struck northwest of Levin and was felt throughout New Zealand.

Ardern had just started her chat when the Beehive was shaken by the quake, which was 34 kilometres deep.

"We're just having a bit of an earthquake here," Ardern said to host Ryan Bridge at the time, as the screen began to shake. "Quite a decent shake here," she continued.

"The Beehive moves a little more than most," she added, referring to the layers of bonded rubber and steel beneath the building designed to take the weight of it and let the foundations move sideways.
