COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins is providing an update on the Delta outbreak.

New Zealand's shift to the new COVID Protection Framework, or 'traffic light' system, is just days away and Hipkins is expected to speak about preparedness.

When the new framework comes into force on Friday, freedoms will be determined by vaccination status and gathering limits depending on which level of the traffic light system a region is at.

The Ministry of Health's latest data shows 86 percent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but only 68 percent of Māori are double dosed.

The Ministry of Health registered 167 new cases on Tuesday; 116 in Auckland, one in Northland, eight in Waikato and nine in Bay of Plenty.
