A video of outgoing Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield dancing has gone viral, with social media users going wild for the doctor breaking out some moves.

The TikTok video, shared by Dr Vanisi Prescott, was filmed at the GP22: Conference for General Practice late last week. Dr Prescott has more than 75,000 followers on TikTok and also did several dance routines with Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners medical director Dr Bryan Betty.

Dr Bloomfield shook his hips to a popular song on TikTok alongside Dr Prescott - and social media users lapped it up. The video has been viewed more than 140,000 times and received nearly 15,000 likes on the social media platform.

"Hahaha love this! He should be NZer of the year!!!" one user said.

"I love this man I think the pandemic made me love him. He was our personal dr for all of NZ," said another.

"So much respect for this man! Go Sir break out them moves" wrote a third.

Dr Bloomfield, who is leaving his role as Director-General of Health at the end of the month, was on Friday awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

"I have appreciated his calm, steadfast approach over what has been an unprecedented few years and agree with the sentiment that he has been an advocate for the general practice and rural hospital medicine workforce throughout the pandemic," said college president Dr Samantha Murton.

"Despite the challenges and the pressures that the pandemic threw at the health sector, I have enjoyed working with Dr Bloomfield on the COVID-19 response and wish him all the best with his next endeavour."
