With the local election just around the corner, the Electoral Commission is encouraging Kiwis to check they're enrolled and their address is up to date.

The Electoral Commission's acting national manager, enrolment and community engagement Ross McPherson urges enrolments or updates are made by midnight on August 12.

"You’ll receive voting papers from your local council in the mail when it’s time to vote in the local elections."

McPherson added enrollments can still be made after August 12 but you will have to contact your local council and arrange a special vote.

Kiwis can enrol, check or update their details online or call 0800 36 76 56 and an enrolment form will be sent to you.

The commission began sending out enrolment packs at the start of July and by August 9, 202,000 applications from Kiwis to enrol or update their details had been made.

And so far 120,000 enrolment packs have been returned to the Commission because those people were no longer living at that address.

"If you've moved house recently, make sure you update your address on the electoral roll."

By September 16 local councils will start sending out voting papers with votes closing at midday on October 8.
