Government's new school drop-off proposal 'radical' but worth considering - Newshub's Michael Morrah says

The Government's "radical" new roading proposal has received a mixed response on AM on Friday.

Under the Reshaping Streets plan sent out for consultation this week, the Government is proposing to give local authorities new powers to change street layouts. The intention is to make roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

One idea is to make it easier for road controlling authorities (RCAs) to establish what is called School Streets, which "restrict motorised traffic outside schools during school drop-off and pick-up times". These may also be extended to other nearby areas "so that children have a clear, safe route to walk, cycle or ride a device to school".

Newshub's investigation reporter Michael Morrah told AM the proposal would have the desired effect on him as he would start walking his kids to school.

"We live relatively close to the school, so it really depends on if we're prepared and organised in the morning as opposed to if we walk or if I drive," he told AM.

"But in general, the situation outside school is a total cluster and there are so many cars. It's a radical move I think, but it's probably something we need to give some thought to as the population increases."

Wellness expert Matilda Green, who was appearing alongside Morrah on AM's panel, wondered if the proposal would make people more organised.

"Would it just push us all to be more organised in the mornings? So you know that you have to be ready by a certain time," Green said.

"I'm not saying I do this because I certainly do not, but it is absolute carnage outside most schools in the morning. My kids are only little, but I drop my oldest off at daycare a couple of days a week and we have to go past a school and even that is carnage."
