Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has had a morning she'll look back on with a mixture of laughter and puzzlement.

Ardern was visiting Te Rōhutu Whio School in Rolleston near Christchurch on Friday morning when she managed to cut her thumb on a school plaque. Then to cap it off, she spread icing all over herself.

"One of those mornings - managed to somehow slice my hand while unveiling a school plaque, then mid cutting a cake somehow spread icing liberally on my arm, pants and mask," Ardern wrote on her Instagram page.

"But none of that mattered - this was the most beautiful school opening. Thank you Te Rōhutu Whio School for being so welcoming, and so fun! Hoping this accident prone morning doesn’t continue…I’m off to a meat works."
