Grant Robertson said National's Sam Uffindell reinstatement announcement was 'disrespectful' and 'cynical'

Labour's Grant Robertson has slammed National's decision to announce Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell return to caucus on the same day as the Queen's funeral.

In a press conference on Monday afternoon, Roberson said it was "disrespectful" and "cynical" to do the announcement on the same day, saying there were options for them about when they released it.

"There were certainly other ways of handling it," Robertson said.

National President Sylvia Wood told reporters earlier on Monday, the investigation into Uffindell's behaviour following bullying allegations when he was younger "did not substantiate any allegations of bullying outside of [his] time at King's College".

"I think we should all take very seriously assault and bullying allegations no matter where we are and what workplace we are in," Robertson said in response to the review findings.

Uffindell was stood down from caucus on August 9 after Stuff revealed he had been asked to leave King's College when he was 16 years old after taking part in a group assault on a younger boy.

Uffindell later apologised and admitted he was a bully at school.

Another allegation surfaced alleging Uffindell acted aggressively towards a flatmate while he was at university, however, Maria Dew KC found it didn't happen as was described in some media reports.

Fourteen people were interviewed during the investigation, while written statements were also made. The actual report isn't being released publicly.

When asked whether there should be a terms of reference or at least an executive summary released to the public, Robertson said when Labour had an issue with a staff member and an investigation was undertaken Labour released an executive summary.

"I'm sure you and others would be expecting the same thing from National."
