Jacinda Ardern fronts media after meeting United Nations Secretary General

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has met with the United Nations Secretary General and the President of Chile on another busy day in New York.

According to a UN readout of their meeting, Ardern and Secretary General Antonio Guterres discussed global security, including the "consequences of the war in Ukraine as well as challenges facing the Pacific region".

"The Secretary-General thanked New Zealand for its stalwart support to multilateralism, including through its active contribution to the implementation of Our Common Agenda."

It follows Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing a mobilisation to assist with his assault on Ukraine as well as the threat of using nuclear weapons.

Guterres earlier this week called on countries to introduce a windfall tax on fossil fuel companies. Ardern brushed that suggestion off, saying it wasn't meant for countries like New Zealand already doing their part to fight climate change.

She said New Zealand's focus was on opposing subsidies for fossil fuel companies.

Ardern will give her United Nations address on Saturday morning (NZT), where she is likely to speak about Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, as well as the need for reform in the UN. New Zealand has long called for the end of the veto at the Security Council.
