Queen Elizabeth's death: Carmel Sepuloni, Erica Stanford on Meghan Markle

While neither of the MPs on AM's political panel on Friday morning met the Queen, they've both been in the presence of another royal - Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

With Queen Elizabeth II passing last week, Kiwis have been sharing memories they have of the late monarch, who visited New Zealand 10 times during her reign.

Appearing on AM on Friday, Labour minister Carmel Sepuloni said she never met the Queen, but she has previously met King Charles III.

She also told AM about meeting Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex who married Prince Harry in 2018 and is among the least popular of the royal family, according to polls

"It was a very formal event. It was in London. It was an exhibition," Sepuloni said. "She was very polite but we didn't hang like girls."

Meghan and Harry left their roles as senior royal family members in January 2020 for a life in the United States. However, while they said they wanted privacy, they've spent much of the past two years doing interviews making serious accusations against senior royals, reportedly damaging their relationship with the wider family.

National MP Erica Stanford, appearing alongside Sepuloni, said while she didn't meet Meghan, she was at an event the Duchess attended while in New Zealand in 2018.

"I did go to a function when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in Wellington. But there was a fire alarm and we all had to go outside in the cold and stand out there for like 45 minutes. So we didn't get to meet her, which is a shame, but I saw her from a distance. She's very beautiful."
