Transport Minister Michael Wood, Wellington Mayor Andy Foster show off BMX skills in Wellington

The Transport Minister and Wellington Mayor have shown off their BMX skills at an event to reveal a set of local infrastructure projects being funded through the Government's Streets for People programme.

Michael Wood on Tuesday morning joined Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at Newtown Primary School in Wellington to announce projects from 13 local authorities which will be funded through the $30 million initiative. It's intended to assist councils to make changes to streets so that they're safer and more people-friendly.

"Delivering on projects such as these helps address our current infrastructure deficit while also meeting future needs caused by population growth and climate change," Wood said.

"We're committed to making it safer, quicker and more attractive for people to use public transport, walk, scoot and ride bikes in urban centres right across Aotearoa New Zealand."

While in Newtown, Wood rode a bicycle down an existing local cycleway and also joined children in cycling over small slopes. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster was also in attendance.
