Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had a large insect friend join her while she addressed media in New York.

During a press conference on Tuesday evening (local time) what looks like a large bug with wings crawled from Ardern's back and onto her shoulder.

The bug even appeared to crawl through Ardern's hair before disappearing behind her head, one reporter is seen lipping "there's a bug".

It then reemerged, this time on Ardern's lower neck.

"You've just got a bug," a reporter is heard saying - warning Ardern of the large bug that was about to crawl onto her neck.

"Just right on the shoulder?" the Prime Minister asked before flicking it away.

From the moment the bug appeared to when Ardern was warned, the bug crawled around her shoulder and back for 1 minute and 30 seconds before she was told.

"Everyone's been playing it quite cool as I was dusting those off," she joked.
