Former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says he would've voted for former US President Donald Trump in their 2016 election if he was in America at the time.

Key was on the podcast BothsidesNow, which is hosted by young National member Eve McCallum and young Labour member Finn Young when he was asked who he would've voted for in the 2016 US election.

"Trump," Key responded. "I am a right-wing voter, I am never voting left."

The former Prime Minister added: "I am not saying it would've been the right decision but I am just saying it's what I would've done."

Key was also asked about a variety of topics on the podcast in a quick-fire question round.

The topics included: compulsory Te Reo in schools, prisoners' voting rights, and whether alcohol sponsorship of sports should be banned.

He said he wasn't against the idea of Te Reo being taught as a compulsory subject in schools but only wanted it to be for primary schools. Additionally, he doesn't think prisoners should be able to vote and doesn't think alcohol sponsorship of sports should be banned.

Key was also asked if he would've voted for the 2022 Brazilian Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro.

"Yes, I think so, but I mean some of these people are getting pretty crazy on the right."

Bolsonaro is a controversial politician and even had Brazilian federal police call for him to be charged for spreading COVID-19 misinformation.

Key reiterated towards the end of the quick-fire round he has never voted for the left.

"I have never voted anything other than right," he said.
