Oranga Tamariki staff involved in Malachi Subecz case before his murder haven't been stood down 'to my knowledge' - Kelvin Davis

Children's Minister Kelvin Davis says, to his knowledge, the Oranga Tamariki staff involved in the handling of 5-year-old Malachi Subecz's case before he was murdered haven't been stood down.

Appearing on Newshub Nation on Saturday morning, Davis said a "practice review" of the case was currently being undertaken - but assured other changes have been made while that review was finalised.

According to Malachi's family and a report released by Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier this week, the 5-year-old's murder could've been prevented by Oranga Tamariki - which still hasn't explained how it got the case so wrong.

Boshier said Oranga Tamariki was warned by Malachi's family members about the woman he was in the care of - who would go on to kill him - yet the child protection agency did nothing.

Newshub Nation host Simon Shepherd quizzed Davis on whether the staff involved in the case prior to the murder had been stood down.

"Not to my knowledge," Davis responded. "But there has been, at that [Oranga Tamariki] site, a look at what needed to happen immediately… and changes have been made there as well as looking across all other sites as well.

"Oranga Tamariki is working to improve their practice - we have put in place a future direction plan and part of it is… the social work practice; making sure that social workers do have the skills, the knowledge, the supervision to make sure they are doing their jobs properly."
