New Zealand First Leader and ex-deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has "lost a great friend today" his beloved dog Beau.

In a tweet, Peters said "no matter how difficult the days have been over years. There was always Beau's welcome at the front door," said Peters.

"RIP Beau."

Beau has been by Peters' side throughout the years, a series of pictures found on Peters' Twitter shows just how close the pair are.

In a picture shared in 2020, Beau can be seen watching on as Peters scrubs the barnacles off a boat.

"Getting rid of barnacles on the boat…with Beau - the serious quality controller looking on!"

Another shared in 2019 shows Peters' arm around Beau while the pair sit on a quad bike with horses standing in the background.

"Had Beau out training to be a farm dog today. Though safe to say he's still not too sure about those horses."

And it seemed Beau's relationship with horses may have strengthened, a tweet in 2021 shows Beau's nose gently touching a horse's nose.

"Beau renewing friendships."
