Russia-Ukraine war: NZ Government slaps further sanctions on Iran for supplying weapons to Moscow

The New Zealand Government has slapped further sanctions on Iran for its role in supplying weapons to Russia.

Travel bans will be imposed on three Iranians and one entity who are involved in the manufacture and supply of drones used by Russia.

Bans on travel were already announced for 22 Iranians earlier in the week for their alleged involvement in the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody, and the violent response to subsequent protests.

"Those sanctioned include two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders Saeed Aghajani and Amir Ali Hajizadeh; as well as the Armed Forces General Staff chair Mohammad Hossein Bagheri; and drone manufacturer Shahed Aviation Industries," NZ Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said.

While the latest tranche of travel bans affected three people, bringing the total to 25, Mahuta said they were part of "a rolling series of initiatives to hold Iran to account".

Mahuta said the sanctions sent a message of New Zealand's "clear condemnation of Iranian involvement in the supply of drones to Russia for use in its unjustified and illegal invasion of Ukraine".

"Russia is using drones to target civilian populations in Ukraine, as well as vital infrastructures such as electricity generation and the power grid," Mahuta said in a statement.

"The Iranian actions threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."
