Former National leader Todd Muller uses valedictory speech to warn of division over Treaty of Waitangi debate

Former National leader Todd Muller has bid farewell to politics, using his valedictory speech to warn of the division the debate over the Treaty of Waitangi could cause.

Muller believes National and Labour have a responsibility to work together instead of letting the debate divide New Zealand.

"Framing Māori aspiration as a binary choice between radicalism and conservatism is as dangerous as rapid changes to our institutions without due diligence and consultation," Muller said.

He also said politicians with poor mental health should be given the same space those suffering from cancer are given.

Muller was the leader in 2020 before standing down after just 53 days following a mental health breakdown.
