Jenna Lynch analysis: National's tax plan expected to rely on reprioritisation, targeted revenue measures for funding

ANALYSIS: The long-awaited fully-costed tax policy from National is expected to drop this week.

Finance spokesperson Nicola Willis won't be drawn on much other than to say it will be a tax plan focused on the squeezed middle.

National thinks those on middle incomes have been hard done by with not much relief from the cost of living crisis.

How she's talking about funding potential tax cuts for middle earners is through, one, reprioritisation - another political euphemism for cuts - and two, targeted revenue measures.

Interestingly when Newshub asked her whether she'd rule out tax hikes she was very specific, saying she'd rule out tax hikes for working people. When pushed she admitted that extended to landlords.

Now she's ruled out a wealth tax, any income tax hikes, capital gains tax, inheritance tax.

Those are the obvious revenue-gathering options.

Newshub is told that once everyone looks at how National wants to raise more money, we'll be thinking, well why haven't we been doing so already.

One question Newshub didn't get an answer on was whether churches and charities should be taxed.

It is all to be revealed later in the week.
