Jenna Lynch: What Labour could do to improve paid parental leave

ANALYSIS: The Prime Minister on Monday confirmed that Labour has a paid parental leave announcement coming soon.

You can only imagine the torrent of feedback Labour got from parents when they killed off the flexible paid parental leave policy that National put up last week.

It would've given families the option to take more time together with their newborn should they wish to do so.

There was outrage from some about both the Government thinking it knows better than parents and the language some Labour MPs were using about the benefits of breastfeeding - the implied pressure that put on mothers and implied expectation that they'd be the ones staying home.

The Prime Minister was more careful with his language on Monday and signalled Labour wants parents to have more time.

One thing they could look to improve is partners leave. Currently, the secondary parent - the one not on paid parental leave - is entitled to take two weeks off when their baby is born, but that is unpaid.

Watch out for Labour perhaps looking to offer paid leave for that second parent and even increase the two-week entitlement as they look to replant their stake in the young parent constituency.
