As it happened: Bill to lower voting age for local elections gets first reading in Parliament

The Bill to lower the voting age for local elections is getting its first reading in Parliament on Tuesday.

Parliament will debate the Supreme Court's declaration preventing 16 and 17-year-olds from voting is inconsistent with the Bill of Rights at 3pm.

Afterwards, the Electoral (Lowering Voting Age for Local Elections and Polls) Legislation Bill, which lowers the voting age for local elections, will receive its first reading and be sent to the Select Committee.
