Election 2023: The Hui Māori electorate debate - Tāmaki Makaurau candidates

The Hui on Tuesday night hosted its third tautohetohe (debate) of the election season - for the Māori electorate of Tāmaki Makaurau.

National's Hinurewa Te Hau, the Greens' Darleen Tana, and Te Pāti Māori's Takutai Tarsh Kemp are all trying to snatch the electorate from current Labour MP Peeni Henare.

Only Henare has been elected to Parliament before and has been the MP for Tāmaki Makaurau since 2014.

John Tamihere first held Tāmaki Makaurau until 2005, when Tā (Sir) Pita Sharples won the seat.

Nearly 90,000 people voted in the electorate last election.

One of seven Māori seats, Tāmaki Makaurau is the most urban, including parts of Auckland south of the Harbour Bridge:

  • Kelston
  • Glen Eden
  • Glendene
  • Te Atatū South
  • Henderson Valley
  • Te Henga/Bethells Beach
  • Whatipū
  • Waiheke
  • Pōnui
  • Central Auckland
  • East Auckland
  • Manukau and surrounding suburbs
  • Māngere
  • Ōtara
  • Pakuranga
  • Manurewa
  • Flat Bush
  • Takaanini

This debate has now finished.
