The Hui hosted its fourth tautohetohe (debate) on Wednesday night this election season, for the Māori seat of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Host Julian Wilcox discussed the contenders' performances with The Hui panel after the debate, to decide who won - Hinurewa Te Hau (National), Darleen Tana (Greens), Takutai Tarsh Kemp (Te Pāti Māori), or Peeni Henare (Labour).
The three wāhine - Te Hau, Tana and Kemp - are trying to take the seat from Henare, who has held it since 2014.
Ahorangi/Associate Professor Khylee Quince, from the Auckland University of Technology's law school, said they all performed well but Henare appeared most confident, likely due to his experience in Parliament.
"This is his to lose really, so he has to talk to his record and to the future, whereas the others were all talking about the future. So that gives you an advantage to some extent."
Morgan Godfery, senior law lecturer at Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University, said while National and Labour butted heads, Te Pāti Māori and the Greens mostly agreed.
"So seeing that alignment in this debate is quite interesting and also seeing those strong sharp contrasts between Labour and National is useful."
Meanwhile Precious Clark, director at Maurea Consulting, agreed with Quince.
"We saw Labour's experience - Peeni's been here before. The others had a lot of good things to say, [but they are] probably less conditioned and as sharpened as Peeni is."
