Election 2023: The Hui panel analyses Te Tai Tokerau debate between Hūhana Lyndon, Mariameno Kapa-Kinga, Kelvin Davis

The Hui has hosted its third tautohetohe (debate) this election season, for the seat of Te Tai Tokerau.

Host Julian Wilcox sat down with The Hui panel after the debate to decide who was the winner - Hūhana Lyndon from the Greens, Mariameno Kapa-Kinga from Te Pāti Māori, or Kelvin Davis from Labour?

Lyndon and Kapa-Kingi want to snatch the role from Davis, who has held the seat since 2014.

Political commentator Shane Te Pou said the three candidates were articulate in conveying "fundamentally the same message".

"The message that we want more authority, do our own things for better outcomes. We might disagree on the vehicle, but we agree on the outcomes - and we don't see that in the Pākehā electorates," Te Pou told The Hui.

Meanwhile, Lanita Ririnui, executive producer and director from Ngā Aho Whakaari (Māori On Screen), said Lyndon was quite strong.

"In the way that our three candidates came through, and they had common messaging in terms of key things that are important to Māori and that is whenua, and that is whānau.

"So I do give acknowledgement to all three candidates for that," she told The Hui.

So who do they think won?
