Election 2023: The Hui Māori electorate debate - Te Tai Tonga candidates

The Hui on Thursday night hosted its second tautohetohe (debate) this election season, between the two men battling for the seat of Te Tai Tonga.

It covers the largest area of all 71 Māori and general electorates and includes Te Waipounamu/South Island, Rēkohu/Chatham Islands, Rakiura/Stewart Island and parts of the capital.

Tākuta Ferris from Te Pāti Māori is up against Rino Tirikatene from Labour, who has held on to the seat since 2011.

It comes after Ferris stood in the electorate for the first time in 2020.

One of seven Māori electorates, Te Tai Tonga includes the cities of:

  • Whakatū / Nelson
  • Ōtautahi / Christchurch
  • Te Tihi o Maru / Timaru
  • Te Oha a Maru / Oamaru
  • Ōtepoti / Dunedin
  • Tāhuna / Queenstown; and
  • Waihōpai / Invercargill.

This debate has now finished.
