Why Chris Hipkins hasn't spoken to Jacinda Ardern much since he became Prime Minister

Chris Hipkins says he hasn't spoken to former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern much after he took over her role at the start of the year.

Hipkins became New Zealand's 41st Prime Minister after Ardern announced her bombshell resignation in January.

Appearing on his regular Tuesday slot on AM, the Labour leader was asked if he has received any advice from Ardern as he gears up for next month's election.

"No, I haven't actually spoken to her for a few weeks. I've been busy on the campaign trail. She's actually out of the country at the moment," he told co-host Ryan Bridge.

"Since I became Prime Minister, we haven't spoken very much, actually. She's been busy moving on with her life and I've obviously been busy doing my job."

However, Hipkins believes the two will continue to stay in touch.

"Jacinda is a good friend and I'm sure that we will continue to be in regular contact," he said.
