Why this ad campaign says 'Australia will decide the New Zealand election'

Overseas voting opens today and for our neighbours across the ditch they are doing what they do best by stealing this year's election, or so they claim.

From midnight on Wednesday, Kiwis living overseas can have their say on who they want to be in Parliament.

But a cheeky social media video is claiming Australia has the opportunity to sway the election.

Joining the countless political advertisements running in the lead-up to the election, a tongue-in-cheek campaign is encouraging offshore Kiwis to vote in this year's election, saying "Australia will decide the New Zealand election".

With up to an estimated half a million New Zealand voters residing across the Tasman, the ad said if every one of them voted, their contribution would surpass the votes indicated in the polls for the individual minor parties including ACT, Greens, NZ First and Te Pāti Māori.

"Australia has always guided New Zealand. We showed them how to make pavlova, gave them their best music in Crowded House, their best athletes in Phar Lap, and their best actors – like that Gladiator bloke," the ad said.

"Now, this election, New Zealand could let Australia decide. So, if you’re an Aussie-Kiwi, get out there and vote. It's easy, because you can do it all on the internet - we probably gave them that too."

Overseas voters can either download their voting papers from the electoral commission, complete them and upload them, or vote in person, up until October 14, 7pm (NZ time).

Watch it above.
