Election 2023: Ryan Bridge calls Christopher Luxon 'Christopher Hipkins' in AM interview

  • 16/10/2023

After a long and tiring election campaign, AM host Ryan Bridge has had a moment he'd like to forget during his first interview with incoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Luxon was appearing on AM on Monday for the first time since winning Saturday's election.

Bridge asked him how it felt to become Prime Minister, with Luxon saying he was very happy.

"As I said to you, it has been a long job interview. It feels for the last 18 months-two years," Luxon said.

"You get very quickly focused on what comes next and actually going to work now and that's the bit that I've been looking forward to. As I said, I think we have a fantastic country and an amazing future, but we do have to face up now and get things done and people want delivery and that's what we need to deliver for them."

As Bridge was closing the interview, he had a moment that left Luxon in hysterics.

"Well, congratulations on your victory at the weekend, it's nice to have you on the programme," Bridge said.

"That's National Party leader and incoming Prime Minister Christopher Hipkins."

The moment Bridge said "Hipkins" he immediately corrected himself to say "Luxon" but it was too late as the entire studio burst into laughter.

"Oh, the professional, you fell over," Luxon said while laughing.

Bridge quickly chipped in saying "It's been a long weekend".

Luxon saw the funny side of it saying, "I forgive you brother, you've had very little sleep like all of us, so it's all good".

Fellow AM co-host Laura Tupou defended Bridge saying, "You did lead five hours of election coverage, you're fine".
