Election 2023: Voters react to National Leader Christopher Luxon's claim he spends $60 a week on his weekly shop

The final Leaders' Debate is all said and done but all anyone wants to know is - is Christopher Luxon okay?

The question comes after debate moderator Jessica Mutch-McKay asked both party leaders, "How much do you spend a week on food?".

Chris Hipkins revealed he spends between $300-$400 for his family shop but Luxon meanwhile boggled voters when he revealed his weekly shop costs him just $60.

The response was met by laughter - and later the Labour Leader saying he was "very concerned about [Luxon's] diet".

Luxon later corrected the record to say $60 was just for breakfast and lunch items - but not before Kiwis had some fun.

"The question I was asked was how much I spend at the supermarket... I appreciate that that's not my total food bill, I was asked a particular question about how much I spend at supermarkets each week and that's what I do."

His family shop is in the hundreds and the rest he buys "on the go", he added.

But before he could clarify, social media lit up with questions and comments on Luxon's shopping list.

"Will Christopher Luxon show us budget recipes?" one person queried.

While another joked a recent picture of the National leader eating KFC must be half his "food budget that week."

"What does he eat? 2-minute noodles?" another person added.

"Chris Luxon only spending $60 a week on food, homie eating Watties Mac n Cheese microwave meal every day," someone else joked.

"$8.5 a day on groceries? Damn! I need to see the Christopher Luxon shopping list".

One person even suggested that the explanation made the matter worse, "$60/wk for breakfast groceries for 1 person? That is a HUGE amount and not even for 7 days!"
