Election weather: Strong winds, heavy rain expected to lash as election countdown begins

Aotearoa is just hours away from the general election and some electorates could be in for some wild weather as the numbers roll through on Saturday night.  

A low over the Tasman Sea is expected to move east across the South Island during the weekend, bringing "very" strong winds and heavy rain.   

MetService has issued several severe weather warnings and watches. Its website said the low "should affect" multiple regions of the South Island and southern parts of the North Island.  

The forecaster warns strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and make driving "hazardous" especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.   

Several areas are under orange strong wind warnings, including in Marlborough from 3am Saturday to 5pm Saturday.   

"Severe gale northwesterlies gusting 120km/h in exposed places, especially about the Kaikoura Coast and ranges," reads MetService's website.

Wellington and Wairarapa south of Carterton's strong wind warning comes into effect at 8am Saturday and ends 6pm Saturday.   

Canterbury High Country is under a strong wind warning too from 9pm Friday to 4pm Saturday.  

A strong wind warning will come into effect over Canterbury Plains, and Christchurch including Banks Peninsula from 6am Saturday to 4pm Saturday.  

Strong wind watches are in place for several regions too.  

Tararua District and Wairarapa between Woodville and Carterton are under a strong wind watch from 10am Saturday to 8pm Saturday. 

Westland south of Harihari and Fiordland north of Milford Sound's strong wind watch will come into effect at 1am Saturday to 11am Saturday. 

A strong wind watch will be issued over Queenstown Lakes, Central North Otago from 11pm Friday until 1pm Saturday.  

Fiordland from Milford Sound southwards' strong wind watch came into effect at 9am Friday and ends 3am Saturday.   

Dunedin and Clutha will also be under a strong wind watch from 11pm Friday to 3pm Saturday.   

Heavy rain is expected too across parts of the South and North Island.  

MetService has issued two heavy rain warnings, which it says could cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, as well as possible surface flooding and slips.  

Westland south of Otira will be under a heavy rain warning from 1am Saturday to 2pm Saturday.  

A heavy rain warning will come into effect over the Headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers south of Arthur's Pass from 2am Saturday to 2pm Saturday.   

Heavy rain watches have been issued too, Tasman west of Motueka, including Buller and Grey District's heavy rain watch comes into effect from 4am Saturday and ends 3pm Saturday.   

Headwaters of Otago lakes and rivers will be under a heavy rain watch too from 2am Saturday to 12pm Saturday.   

A heavy rain watch has been issued for Fiordland from 1am Saturday to 10am Saturday.
