A man has been arrested after allegedly driving his vehicle towards a group of National Party supporters and candidate campaigning in Auckland's New Lynn.
On Saturday at about 3pm, a 25-year-old man is alleged to have driven towards New Lynn candidate, Paulo Garcia, and party supporters campaigning on the side of the road.
A spokesperson for the party claims the man "swerved at the last moment to avoid them", then got out of the vehicle and began waving a Labour Party hoarding, though they said there's "no suggestion this incident is related to Labour".
A police spokesperson said the man got out of the vehicle and behaved aggressively, where he allegedly pushed one of the party supporters.
"He was arrested by police nearby a short time later, and the vehicle he was in was searched."
Police said the man has been charged with common assault, driving while disqualified, behaving threateningly, possession of cannabis for supply, and for failure to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search.
The National spokesperson said the incident won't "deter our teams from continuing to run strong local campaigns to change the government".
The man was due to appear in the Waitākere District Court on Sunday.
