NZ election 2023 live electorate results

Newshub has tracked the results of each electorate in the 2023 New Zealand election.

Below are the preliminary results for each of New Zealand's electorates as the results roll in, with the leading candidate, the next highest-ranking candidate, and how much of the vote has been returned. 

The electorate of Port Waikato is not included as only the party vote is being counted on Saturday night. A by-election will be held there in late November.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins has conceded the election to Christopher Luxon, who will become New Zealand's 42nd Prime Minister.

Auckland Central: Chlöe Swarbrick (GRN) - 48 pct // Mahesh Muralidhar (NAT) - 39 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Chlöe Swarbrick has kept the electorate after securing it for the Greens in 2020.

Banks Peninsula: Vanessa Weenink (NAT) - 36.9 pct // Tracey McLellan (LAB) - 36.7 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct.

  • With almost every vote counted, it's neck and neck: National challenger Vanessa Weenink is leading incumbent Labour MP Tracey McLellan by just 83 votes. 

Bay of Plenty: Tom Rutherford (NAT) - 53 pct // Pare Taikato (LAB) - 18 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Bay of Plenty will remain a National seat, with retiring Todd Muller to be succeeded by Tom Rutherford, who won aganst Labour's Pare Taikato by a sizeable 13,182 votes.

Botany: Christoper Luxon (NAT) - 69 pct; Kharag Singh (LAB) - 22 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Christchurch Central: Duncan Webb (LAB) - 42 pct // Dale Stephens (NAT) - 36 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Christchurch East: Reuben Davidson (LAB) - 40 pct // Matt Stock (NAT) - 34 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Coromandel: Scott Simpson (NAT) - 55 pct // Beryl Riley (LAB) - 17 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Dunedin: Rachel Brooking (LAB) - 43 pct // Michael Woodhouse - 22 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Dunedin will remain a red seat. Labour's Rachel Brooking has won by 7169 votes, succeeding the outgoing David Clark. National's Michael Woodhouse secured just 22 percent of the vote.

East Coast: Dana Kirkpatrick (NAT) - 45 pct // Tamati Coffey (LAB) - 35 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct.

  • National's Dana Kirkpatrick has won the seat back from Labour. This was Labour MP Kiri Allan's seat, but has been contested by Tamati Coffey for Labour after Allan's fall from grace and resignation.

East Coast Bays: Erica Stanford (NAT) - 74 pct // Naisi Chen (LAB) - 19 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Epsom: David Seymour (ACT) - 48 pct // Paul Goldsmith (NAT) - 23 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • ACT leader David Seymour will maintain the Epsom electorate, a seat he has held since 2014. In pursuit was National's Paul Goldsmith, but trailed Seymour by about 7000 votes.

Hamilton East: Ryan Hamilton (NAT) - 49 pct // Georgie Dansey (LAB) - 35 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Hamilton West: Tama Potaka (NAT) - 48 pct // Myra Williamson (LAB) - 30 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Tama Potaka has maintained the Hamilton West electorate for another term, securing the seat by a lead of 5394. 

Hauraki-Waikato: Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke (MAO) - 51 pct // Nanaia Mahuta (LAB) - 43 pct. Vote counted: 99 pct

  • Nanaia Mahuta has conceded Hauraki-Waikato to Te Pāti Māori's Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke That is an incredible shift. Mahuta is the current Foreign Affairs Minister and first entered Parliament in 1996. As she is not on the list, she won't return to Parliament.

Hutt South: Chris Bishop (NAT) - 45 pct // Ginny Andersen (LAB) - 42 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Chris Bishop has won with a narrow margin. He was the MP for this seat between 2017 and 2020 and has now won it back. 

Ikaroa-Rāwhiti: Cushla Tangaere-Manuel (LAB) - 56 pct // Meka Whaitiri (MAO) - 41 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Meka Whaitiri, who ditched Labour to stand for Te Pāti Māori in Ikaroa-Rawhiti, has rung the Labour candidate to concede. On Te Pāti Māori's current results, she won't be returning to Parliament.

Ilam: Hamish Campbell (NAT) - 46 pct // Raf Manji (TOP) - 26 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Invercargill: Penny Simmonds (NAT) - 57 pct // Liz Craig (LAB) - 30 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Penny Simmonds has again secured Invercargill, a true-blue National seat. She only won in 2020 by a slim margin, so this is a big expansion of her support.

Kaikōura: Stuart Smith (NAT) - 51 pct // Emma Dewhirst (LAB) - 23 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Longtime Kaikōura MP Stuart Smith will maintain his seat, beating Labour's Emma Dewhirst by 10,026 votes. He has held the electorate since 2014. 

Kaipara ki Mahurangi: Chris Penk (NAT) - 60 pct // Guy Wishart (LAB) - 18 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Chris Penk will maintain the Kaipara ki Mahurangi seat, which has long been a National stronghold. He leads Labour's Guy Wishart by a substantial 15,403 votes. 

Kelston: Carmel Sepuloni (LAB) - 45 pct // Ruby Schaumkel (NAT) - 31 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Mana: Barbara Edmonds (LAB) - 50 pct // Frances Hughes (NAT) - 32 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Māngere: Lemauga Lydia Sosene (LAB) - 63 pct // Rosemary Bourke (NAT) - 19 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct 

Manurewa: Arena Williams (LAB) - 59 pct // Siva Kilari (NAT) - 32 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Maungakiekie: Greg Fleming (NAT) - 50 pct // Priyanca Radhakrishnan (LAB) - 36 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Mt Albert: Helen White (LAB) - 36 pct // Melissa Lee (NAT) - 35 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Labour's Helen White is leading National's Melissa Lee by a whisper - just 106 votes. Lee held the lead for most of the evening but slipped behind as the night went on. The seat had been former Labour Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's since 2017 before she withdrew from politics earlier this year. 

Mt Roskill: Carlos Cheung (NAT) - 46 pct // Michael Wood (LAB) - 3940 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • This is a significant upset. Michael Wood was considered a future Labour leader and will be completely out of Parliament on these numbers.

Napier: Katie Nimon (NAT) - 55 pct // Mark Hutchinson (LAB) - 31 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The Napier seat has flipped from red to blue, with retiring Stuart Nash to be succeeded by National's Katie Nimon - who leads Labour candidate Mark Hutchinson by over 8000. 

Nelson: Blair Cameron (NAT) - 42.4 pct // Rachel Elizabeth Boyack (LAB) - 42.3 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • With all the votes counted, it's neck and neck. Incumbent MP Rachel Boyach is trailing National's Blair Cameron by the merest of margins - 54 - with both candidates sitting at just under 43 percent. Before Boyack secured the seat in 2020, the seat had been a National stronghold. 

New Lynn: Paulo Garcia (NAT) - 40 pct // Deborah Russell (LAB) - 39 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Another upset here. New Lynn was considered a safe Labour seat and Deborah Russell has a high profile as a minister. But it looks like she has lot it to National. Paulo Garcia is leading by 483 votes.

New Plymouth: David Macleod (NAT) - 54 pct // Glen Bennett (LAB) - 36 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Incumbent Labour MP Glen Bennett has lost the New Plymouth seat to National's Macleod, flipping yet another seat from red to blue. Macleod won by 6450. 

North Shore: Simon Watts (NAT) - 63 pct // George Hampton (LAB) - 22 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The North Shore electorate will be maintained by National's Simon Watts, who is leading Labour candidate Hampton by a very convincing lead.

Northcote: Dan Bidois (NAT) - 56 pct // Shanan Halbert (LAB) - 31 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Northland: Grant McCallum (NAT) - 37 pct // Willow-Jean Prime (LAB) - 22 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The battleground electorate is set to flip from red to blue. Incumbent Willow-Jean Prime won the seat by just 163 votes last election.

Ōhāriu: Greg O'Connor (LAB) - 43 pct // Nicola Willis (NAT) - 39 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Labour's Greg O'Connor appears to have held this seat with 1427 votes over National deputy leader Nicola Willis.

Ōtaki: Tim Costley (NAT) - 52 pct // Terisa Ngobi (LAB) - 37 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Pakuranga: Simeon Brown (NAT) - 74 pct // Nerissa Henry (LAB) - 20 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Simeon Brown has maintained the Pakuranga electorate by a very convincing margin.

Palmerston North: Tangi Utikere (LAB) - 45 pct // Ankit Bansal (NAT) - 35 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Incumbent Labour MP Tangi Utikere has maintained his seat by 2733 votes. 

Panmure-Ōtāhuhu: Jenny Salesa (LAB) - 54 pct // Navtej Randhawa (NAT) - 25 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Papakura: Judith Collins (NAT) - 61 pct // Anahila Kanongata'a (LAB) - 24 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Judith Collins has maintained the Papakura electorate by a lead of almost 11,000. She has held the seat since 2008.

Rangitata: James Meager (NAT) - 58 pct // Jo Luxton (LAB) - 30 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Incumbent Jo Luxton is set to lose the seat to National's James Meager.

Rangitīkei: Suze Redmayne (NAT) - 48 pct // Zulfiqar Butt (LAB) - 23 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National has once again secured the Rangitīkei seat, with Suze Redmayne beating Labour's Zulfiqar Butt by 8626 votes. 

Remutaka: Chris Hipkins (LAB) - 55 pct // Emma Chatterton (NAT) - 33 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Outgoing Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has maintained his Remutaka seat, but by a far smaller margin than last election.

Rongotai: Julie Anne Genter (GRN) - 37 pct // Fleur Fitzsimons (LAB) - 35 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct.

  • The Greens have taken Rongotai away from Labour. Genter has beaten Fitzsimons by 792 votes.

Rotorua: Todd McClay (NAT) - 55 pct // Ben Sandford (LAB) - 29 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Selwyn: Nicola Grigg (NAT) - 67 pct // Luke Jones (LAB) - 24 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Southland: Joseph Mooney (NAT) - 61 pct // Simon McCallum (LAB) - 15 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Joseph Mooney has maintained the seat, beating Labour challenger Simon McCallum by a substantial 14,973 votes.

Taieri: Ingrid Leary (LAB) - 40 pct // Matthew French (NAT) - 37 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Takanini: Rima Nakhle (NAT) - 60 pct // Anae Neru Leavasa (LAB) - 34 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • This is a major flip. Takanini is New Zealand's newest electorate after being established in 2020. Labour held it between 2020 and Saturday night.

Tāmaki: Brooke van Velden (ACT) - 47 pct // Simon O'Connor (NAT) - 33 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • ACT has taken this seat away from National. It means ACT now holds two electorate seats. Simon O'Connor won't return to Parliament.

Tāmaki Makaurau: Peeni Henare (LAB) - 41 pct // Takutai Tarsh Kemp (MAO) - 39 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Taranaki-King Country: Barbara Kuriger (NAT) - 64 pct // Angela Roberts (LAB) - 26 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The National stronghold will remain a true-blue seat for another term despite the scandal involving Barbara Kuriger this past term.

Taupō: Louise Upston (NAT) - 59 pct // Aladdin Al-Bustanji (LAB) - 19 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Tauranga: Sam Uffindell (NAT) - 47 pct // Jan Tinetti (LAB) - 24 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Incumbent National MP Sam Uffindell has maintained the seat.

Te Atatū: Angee Nicholas (NAT) - 40 pct // Phil Twyford (LAB) - 40 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • One of the closest seats on the preliminary figures. Labour stronghold Te Atatū might be looking at a flip - a momentous moment for the electorate. National's Angee Nicholas is leading longtime Labour MP Phil Twyford by just 30 votes. Twyford has held the seat since 2011. 

Te Tai Hauāuru: Debbie Ngarewa-Packer (MAO) - 63 pct // Soraya Peke-Mason (LAB) - 29 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • Te Pāti Māori's Debbie Ngarewa-Packer is set to steal the electorate from Labour, which was secured by list MP Adrian Rurawhe in 2020.

Te Tai Tokerau: Kelvin Davis (LAB) - 39 pct // Mariameno Kapa-Kingi (MAO) - 37 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Te Tai Tonga: Tākuta Ferris (MAO) - 47 pct // Rino Tirikatene (LAB) - 40 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Tukituki: Catherine Wedd (NAT) - 55 pct // Anna Lorck (LAB) - 29 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Upper Harbour: Cameron Brewer (NAT) - 55 pct // Vanushi Walters (LAB) - 26 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Waiariki: Rawiri Waititi (MAO) - 75 pct // Toni Boynton (LAB) - 21 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Waikato: Tim Van de Molen (NAT) - 66 pct // Jamie Toko (LAB) - 21 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Waimakariri: Matt Doocey (NAT) - 59 pct // Dan Rosewarne (LAB) - 30 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

Wairarapa: Mike Butterick (NAT) - 47 pct // Kieran McAnulty (LAB) - 40 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National has won back Wairarapa from current Labour MP Kieran McAnulty.

Waitaki: Miles Anderson (NAT) - 52 pct // Ethan Reille (LAB) - 25 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The Waitaki seat will remain blue with Miles Anderson beating Labour's Ethan Reille by 10,359 votes. Anderson will succeed retiring Jacqui Dean. 

Wellington Central: Tamatha Paul (GRN) - 39 pct // Ibrahim Omer (LAB) - 29 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The Green Party's Tamatha Paul has won this seat. Retiring Labour MP Grant Robertson won the seat by a landslide in 2020 with almost 19,000 votes and had held the position for several teams. New candidate Ibrahim Omer has failed to keep it in Labour.

West Coast-Tasman: Maureen Pugh (NAT) - 33 pct // Damien O'Connor (LAB) - 30 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • After a tight race between Labour incumbent Damien O'Connor and challenger Maureen Pugh, National has flipped the seat, with Pugh winning by a slim 915 votes. O'Connor had held the seat since 2011 and was a minister in the previous Government.

Whanganui: Carl Bates (NAT) - 49 pct // Steph Lewis (LAB) - 34 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • After Labour's Steph Lewis secured the seat in 2020 by a margin of over 8000, Whanganui has flipped to blue, with National's Carl Bates stealing the electorate by 5070. 

Whangaparāoa: Mark Mitchell (NAT) - 68 pct // Estefania Muller Pallarès (LAB) - 16 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • National's Mark Mitchell will maintain the seat by a landslide. He secured the electorate by 7823 majority in 2020, but has that beat in spades with a vote majority of 19,330. 

Whangārei: Shane Reti (NAT) - 50 pct // Angie Warren-Clark (LAB) - 22 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct

  • The Whangārei seat was narrowly secured by retiring Labour MP Emily Henderson in 2020 by just 431 votes, and it's now set to switch back to National territory. 

Wigram: Megan Woods (LAB) - 44 pct // Tracy Summerfield (NAT) - 39 pct. Vote counted: 100 pct
